Objective setting

Objective setting gives the following benefits to the individual:

They know what they must do or have certain direction.
They have an opportunity to accept greater responsibility.
They have an opportunity to express their strengths and weaknesses and state areas in which they feel uncertain.
They can organize themselves to meet objective(s)
They have an opportunity for development and recognition.



Objective setting is useful because it:

Concentrates on priorities.
Leads to improved information and controls.
Improve morale.
Identifies necessary training and development needs.



The essential characteristics of a good set of objectives are as follows:

Relevant.
Not too many.
Specific, clear and precise, not too general.
Achievable, realistic but stretching.
Within the control of the individual.
Flexible in how they are achieved.
Have a time-scale.
Consistent with other people’s objective.
